Step 1
1 of 2During his conquests, Alexander the Great spent the longest time fighting in Afghanistan. While most of the territories he conquered fell after a single battle, the people of Afghanistan took advantage of the mountainous terrain in their homeland by adopting to fight Alexander in guerilla warfare while hiding deep in the forests or high on mountains. Because of this, Alexander took much more losses in Afghanistan than anywhere else, which took a toll on his armies. He became frustrated because of it, burning down villages and killing civilians in an attempt to draw out the defenders.
