Step 1
1 of 2When we talk about molecular orbital (MO) diagrams, these diagrams represent the relative energy levels of atomic and molecular orbitals and the linear combination of atomic orbitals which combine to form the same number of molecular orbitals. When two atomic orbitals combine, they form one lower-energy molecular orbital (which is known as bonding orbital) and one higher-energy molecular orbital (which is known as antibonding orbital). MO diagrams refer to molecular orbital (MO) theory, which says that molecular orbitals are more likely to be delocalized over the entire molecule rather than being localized in the atoms which form a molecule.
