Railways had a particular effect on how urban areas in the Industrial Revolution developed, as while they allowed for people to more easily cross large spans of territory in a short amount of time, urban rails also served to segregate people based on income. Wealthier middle-class families with easier access to railways were able to seclude themselves from lower-class families, who were often forced to live in slums that grew out of sight from many urban rails.
