I believe that the poem would be quite different if Villanueva used the usual meter and rhyme and not free verse. The fact that the poem is written in free verse makes it more interesting to read. Although it is "less serious", it is more interesting to readers. After all, throughout the whole poem, she defies the rules that society imposes on her, so it is logical for the poem to be written in free verse.
