In step 1: the transporter is inactive and a solute molecule is ready to bind to it.

In steps 121\Rightarrow 2: When the solute binds to the cytoplasmic portion of the transporter, ATP is hydrolyzed to ADP and a phosphate is introduced to the transporter.

In steps 232\Rightarrow 3: A conformational change occurs in the transporter and the solute molecule is transported outside.

In steps 343\Rightarrow 4: When solute dissociates from the transporter, the phosphate is removed from the transporter and it is reverted back to its nonphosphorylated state.
