The Tuman Doctrine was developed to respond to the Soviet Union's threat of capturing Greece and Turkey and enforcing communism. To stop the Soviets' aggression and prevent the fall of communism, the US sought to provide immediate financial and military support to the affected areas. In addition, the British government's withdrawal from assisting the Greek government influenced President Truman's decision to request immediate assistance from Congress. The Truman Doctrine paved the way for the containment policy and a military alliance to counter Soviet aggression.
