We have a capacity to take in a large number of sensory information, as we do all the time, but we can only keep them for a short time (1/2 - 3 seconds). That is just enough time to pick and switch our attention to relevant stimuli which we then take into our short-term memory. STM has a capacity of only about seven items, while long-term memory has an unlimited capacity.
