When a capacitor is connected across a 115 V115 \text{ V} outlet as shown in the figure below, there will be an extra path for the current to flow. This current can be determined by applying the definition of capacitance:

  • This shows that there will be a current through the connecting wires.
  • However, since the capacitor is insulated, the AC current will just oscillate but not pass between the capacitor plates.
