Poetry in Sports Hemphill's poem is about more than sports, but you may find the game part as exciting to read as the sports page of your newspaper. Try reporting a game you've watched closely (or better, played in) using free verse and all the musical strategies available to the poet. When you're describing action, use short, fast sentences. Try to find words that sound like the sounds of your game. (Maybe you started a list before you read the poem. See page 572.)

Dickinson's editors changed the word Checks in "I Never Saw a Moor" to Chart, meaning "map." How does this change in diction, or word choice, change the sense of lines $5-8$ ?

Lucinda Matlock probably died more than a hundred years ago-before there were movies, telephones, television, computers, cars, or antibiotics. Write Lucinda a letter comparing and contrasting the details of her rural life and those of most people's lives today. Hint: Take each part of Matlock's story and think of how it would be different if it were happening today. For instance, it was probably a wagon drawn by horses that was being driven home in line 4. What would it be today? Have many people alive today been married for seventy years? Do many have twelve children? Why would it be unlikely today that eight of Matlock's children would die (as they did) before they were forty or so years old? Talk to Lucinda from your perch in time a hundred years later.

Musical Medley Create a musical medley by combining soundtracks of the songs. Write a brief introduction and conclusion to your soundtrack. Give the tape to a senior citizens' center or a retirement residence.

Start by listing moments or days in your life that you associate with some feeling. Any one of these moments may provide that spark, that connection between outside events and inside feelings that may lead you to a poem. a. You learn that your family is moving to another city and you know you'll have to give up friends and neighborhood and everything familiar. b. Your grandmother has died and you realize you'll never see her face again or open the birthday and Christmas presents she never failed to send. c. You smile at someone you like a lot, and you see that person looking back and smiling at you. d. You go back to your old playground and find that all the kids there look so young. e. You have a wonderful dream.

Your Own Dream, Your Own Hope Write two poems. One should be about your own dream or dreams and should open with the words "I dream." The other should be about what happens when those dreams are taken away or "deferred." (Be sure to check the notes you made fo the Quickwrite on page 59 before you read Hughes's poem.) Before you write your poems, think carefully about your tone. Here are some emotions you might want to convey: anger, gladness, cheerfulness, joy, sorrow, confidence, gratitude, awe.

Views of the Jacaranda The tree with the odd name opens and closes the poem, shedding both light and darkness on the two little girls. Suppose you are asked to illustrate this poem. Paint or draw the tree as the speaker sees it, but first be sure you know exactly what it looks like yourself. Include in your painting one important line from the poem.

How does the boy in "Fifteen" feel about the motorcycle? What lines convey that feeling? What have you experienced that allows you to understand his emotion?

How might Sojourner Truth update "Ain't I a Woman?" for today? Meet in groups to discuss these questions and report on your answers.

• Who might her audience be? What issues might she choose to address?
• How do you think she would feel about the lives of women today? Look at your own community and school. What progress would she notice? What would she like to see changed?
• Rewrite the speech in prose or verse. Use your own words, but remember that you are writing as Sojourner Truth, from her point of view.

When you finish writing your personal reflections, compare your responses in class. Do you all agree on what's important and interesting about Glancy's reflection? Or do people have very different responses? How do you account for the differences in responses?
