In 1989, Tiananmen Square was the site of a massive protest which resulted in a lot of violence. By that time, China spent decades under Maoist rulers, which resulted in major economic growth for the country. However, people had some of their rights constantly repressed and were starting to feel the foreign influence from the west, which made them desire political change. The intellectual elite of China was the first to turn against the Chinese Communist Party and was followed soon by students and other educated citizens. Those peaceful protests started as early as 1986 and were slowly turning into a political movement.
