The Roman Republic accepted the ideas of an elected government and limited power within government offices. Male citizens were able to participate in a representative government through the Roman Senate, the Council of Plebs, and the Centuriate Assembly. People were given rights that depended on their class and status in society, so male citizens had greater opportunities, but legal protection was provided to all citizens of the Roman Empire.
