In general, can we predict the effect of doubling the concentration of on the rate of the overall reaction ? Can we predict the effect if the reaction is known to be an elementary reaction?
Solution
VerifiedWe can identify the type of elementary reaction by the number of the reactants involved. This is called the molecularity of elementary reactions. Unimolecular elementary reactions involve one reactant atom or molecule; bimolecular elementary reactions involve two reactant atom or molecule; and so on. It is very rare for elementary reactions that involve three or more reactant atom or molecule to occur because of two factors. The first factor is that the collision of the three or more reactant species must be simultaneous; thus there is a low probability for the reaction to happen. The second factor is the orientation of the reactant species. The orientation of the reactant species must allow "effective" collisions between each other for the reaction to occur, as stated from the collision theory.
