Question

In living things, energy is stored in the molecule adenosine triphosphate, called ATP for short. ATP is said to act like a battery, storing energy when it is not needed and instantly releasing energy when it is required. Investigate how energy is stored and the role of ATP in biological processes. Write a report including at least three references.

We all need energy, our life depends on it. ATP is like a battery that charges our organism, but only when we need the energy. When we resting, the energy is stored. How is it done?

Energy is transfer from a source, such as glucose molecules, directly to ATP which is intermediate source. It is also a reservoir for chemical energy which is linked when reactions are required.

During photosynthesis chemical energy is linked to ATP and is utilized during synthesis from light-dependent stage to light-independent stage.

It is important to realize that pigments absorb light rather than absorb light energy, it might seems a bit confuse, but it becomes logical once we study entire process carefully.

Glycolysis is placed in cytoplasm and mitochondria, it generates two equivalents of ATP by substracting phosphorylation which is catalyzed by two enzymes and pyruvate kinase. Resulting of glycolysis is production of ATP and reduced of NAD. There are steps in this process, which includes the link reaction in electron transport chain and Krebs cycle.
