In my opinion, the unions don't have such a useful role in American economy as they used to have.

Today, they are especially not necessary.

Globalization, outsourcing, moving the heavy industry outside the United States and online orientation of offering services completely transformed both economy and society, so labor unions lost their primary sense of existence. Today, a lot of labor force has high degree of education and a lot of skills, so they are very sought after. There is no need to protest or strike when top companies are literally bidding offers for professionals.
