Days 1-5 constitute the menstrual phase where the superficial layer of the endometrium is sloughed off as the menstrual flow. Days 6-14 is the proliferative phase where a rise in estrogen levels from growing follicles causes the endometrium to regenerate and form may glands and blood vessels. Days 15-28 make up the secretory phase where increased progesterone causes the endometrium to grow even more and secrete nutrients in preparation for a growing fetus. If no fertilization takes place, LH levels decline and progesterone does with it, causing vessels to retract and tissues to die, which leads to menses all over again.
