The first Punic war was mainly due to the presence of Carthaginians in Sicily which made the Romans wary and caused them to send armies to the Sicilian territory, earning them the island in the end. The Second Punic war started with the Carthaginian general Hannibal entering Italy with an army. He managed to win some fights but was unable to win Sicily and defeat the Romans. The third Punic war was caused when the Romans in 146B.C. burnt the Carthage city and conquered it, renaming the new province as Africa.
