In early April, 1942, nearly 70,000 Allied soldiers surrendered to Japan on the Bataan Peninsula. They were then taken as prisoners of war and forced to march more than 60 miles inland in flagrant disregard of the Geneva Conventions. The march killed over 7,000 troops in the process.
