Energy in the ecosystem passes through trophic levels. Every organism is placed in a specific trophic (feeding) level. Primary producers (autotrophic organisms) make up the first trophic level. Organisms that consume primary producers are called primary consumers (herbivores). They form second trophic levels. Above them are omnivores and carnivores as secondary consumers.
