Small Intestine

  • it is about 6 meters long, and is of smaller diameter than the large intestine.
  • it is divided into 3 parts : its first part is called Duodenum, its next part is called Jejunum. and its last portion is termed Ileum.

Duodenum :

  • is the proximal 10 inches, and is mostly fixed to the posterior abdominal wall i.e. Retroperitoneal.
  • its villi are board, long and leaf - like.
  • its submucosa is thick and it contains Brunner s glands which are present deep to the muscularis mucosa.
  • Goblet cells are not so numerous.

Jejunum :

  • is the largest part of the small following the Duodenum.
  • it forms the proximal 2/5 of the small intestine.
  • its villi are slightly short and are tongue - shaped.
  • Goblet cells are more numerous, than in the duodenum.
  • there are neither Brunner s glands, nor Peyer s patches.

Ileum :

  • it follows the jejunum and join the caecum at the Ileo - caecal junction.
  • it is the distal 3/5 of the small intestine.
  • the villi are long, slender and finger - like.
  • the villi over the Peyer s patches are absent.
  • presence of Peyer s patches which are collections of lymph follicles. they are present in the C.T. corium of the mucosa but they pierce the muscularis mucosa and may appear in the submucosal layer of the ileum.
