Question

# Parker throws a ball off the top of a building. The building is 350 feet high and the initial velocity of the ball is 30 feet per second. Find out how long it will take the ball to hit the ground by solving the equation$- 16 t ^ { 2 } - 30 t + 350 = 0$

Solution

Verified
Step 1
1 of 2

$-16t^2-30t+350=0$

Divide throughout by $-2$

$8t^2+15t-175=0$

$t = \dfrac{-15\pm\sqrt{15^2-4\cdot 8\cdot (-175)}}{2\cdot 8}$

$t = \dfrac{-15\pm\sqrt{225+5600}}{16}$

$t = \dfrac{-15\pm\sqrt{5825}}{16}$

Since $t$ must be positive we reject the negative solution

$t = \dfrac{-15+\sqrt{5825}}{16}\approx 3.83$
