Question

Reread lines 31-33. In these lines and in others, it is apparent that Achilles and other characters in the epic know that he is fated to die soon. What do you think prevents Achilles from attempting to change his fate?

Solution

Verified

Achilles feels great regret for his actions. After a fight with Agamemnon, Achilles refuses to take part in battle, and in a petty act of revenge, asks Zeus to assist in assuring that the Greeks lose the battle. He wanted the Greeks to see how weak they were without him. His friend was killed in battle largely as a result of this action.

Achilles has such a strong desire to avenge his friend's death in attempt to make things right that he no longer cares whether he lives or dies.
