Research an example of an item with decreasing supply and increasing demand that occurred in the United States within the last five years. What caused the supply of the item to decrease? When demand increased, what happened to the price of the item? What is the current status of the supply and demand of the item?
Solutions
VerifiedA product that presents a reduction in supply at certain times of the year is mango. This fruit is exported to the United States by Caribbean or Latin American countries. However, the harvest time of this product is in autumn (approximately from August to November) and this fruit can be kept frozen for a month.
Therefore, during these months where the fruit is imported, the supply will increase and a price will be established depending on the production costs, in this case importing it.
One item that has decreased in supply while demand has increased in the US is water. One of the main reasons for the decline in supply is the changing global climate which causes faster rates of evaporation and decreases in the US’ snowpack. Demand is increasing due to the need for more water for plants, humans, and animals as the temperature has gradually risen. As the demand has increased, the price has increased too as people “compete” to acquire the increasingly scarce resource. These trends are generally expected to continue in the same directions – the only question is at what rate they grow, depending on our overall ability to reverse some of the effects of human-caused climate change.
