Research and write an essay about the "prague Spring." What did it hope to achieve, and why was it unsuccessful? Be sure to include a bibliography of the sources you consulted.
Solution
VerifiedIn 1968, under the leadership of Alexander Dubcek, Czechoslovakia experienced a short-lived phase of liberalization known as the Prague Spring. Dubcek promised to build "socialism with a human face" (p.822) when he became the leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. He subdued censorship and limited the secret police's authority. People were given the freedom to travel abroad and express themselves. Because of the reduced censorship, writers were able to publish works about government transgressions and incompetence. People, particularly students have also found the courage to ask for political reform. Thinking of the repercussions of such acts, the Soviet Army occupied Czechoslovakia in August 1968. Dubcek was replaced by Gustav Husak, who overturned Dubcek's reforms and restored the old order.
