Question

Review the events listed under "Migration and Settlement" on the thematic timeline on page 237, and then discuss how southern expansion, the end of the Atlantic slave trade in 1808, and the subsequent rise of the internal slave trade affected the experiences and identities of the African American population.

Solution

Verified

Though the Atlantic slave trade was outlawed in 1808, the demand for slaves was still high. Thus, America's internal slave trade boomed. By the 1820s, most slaves had not been born in in Africa. As a result, African American culture was beginning to become more homogenous-- a mix of West African values and customs and the language and laws of the white south. African Americans began practicing Christianity as a result of their masters' worries that it was their responsibility as Christian men to "share means of salvation," which prompted them to pass on their Christian beliefs to their slaves. Slaves in the Chesapeake region adapted the religion to suit their own needs and founded Black Protestantism. Its movement spurred by the domestic slave trade, the religion spread throughout the south.

The domestic slave trade meant that separation of slave families continued. To cope with these severed ties, young, newly married slaves would select older slaves to serve as "aunts" and "uncles." Enslaved women often celebrated separated loved ones by naming their children after them. Though they lived lives of poverty and tragedy, slaves were reluctant to attempt uprisings, knowing how unlikely the prospect of success was with their limited communication abilities.
