Review the fourth through seventh paragraphs. What central or main ideas connect these paragraphs? How does Anaya build upon them to provide a complex analysis of reading and storytelling? Highlight evidence from the text and make annotations to support your explanation.
Anaya expresses the idea of reading as a path to liberation over the course of several paragraphs which detail his progression from a child who listens with wonder to the stories of elders to an adult who begins authoring his own stories. Paradoxically, it was his limited access to books as a child which imbued books with even more power and magic. This attitude later worked itself into his own stories, where a character refers to books as the “magic of words.”
