Step 1
1 of 3In the fallopian tube, the capable spermatozoa pass through the cells of the cumulus and adhere to a second cellular barrier surrounding the oocyte: the zona pellucida.This causes a reaction in the head of some spermatozoa, which release enzymes that allow them to cross the zona pellucida. The first spermatozoon to cross the zona pellucida fuses with the cell membrane of the oocyte, which causes the activation of the oocyte in a few seconds. It results in many reactions with major consequences:
- A chemical transformation of the zona pellucida which thus becomes impermeable to spermatozoa. Monospermia is respected;
- The expulsion of the second polar globule which makes the oocyte a haploid cell, containing 23 chromosomes;
- The phagocytosis of the spermatozoon which allows its 23 chromosomes to penetrate inside the oocyte which becomes an egg.
