Imagine you are a citizen of Athens during Greece's golden age. Write a letter to your fellow citizens describing what types of buildings or public works of art you feel should be added to the city.
Consider:
-
the purpose or use of any new buildings, statues, or paintings
-
the religious beliefs of you and your fellow citizens
-
the daily activities or entertainment needs of Athenians
Solution
VerifiedMy fellow Athenians, We are living in the most beautiful city in the world. Our artists and architects have created some of the most beautiful buildings and works of art imaginable. Our gods must be pleased with us, or our city would not prosper as it has. However, there are some things I wish we would have added to our city. I believe there are too few memorials to our great history. We have too few works of art showing our great triumph over the mighty Persians. We could have at least build a statue in tribute to Leonidas and his brave Spartans who gave their lives at the Thermopylae, so we could evacuate and later save our city. We are people of science and education as well. Does our city, named after the goddess of wisdom herself, not deserve a great building in which our brightest young minds could study? Lastly, we should supply Athens with fresh water by building sewers. Our city is too big not to have it, and I fear what would happen if some emergency, like an enemy besieging us, would befall us. In addition to that, we should learn from the ancient civilizations of Asia, and build ourselves a public bath. It could both be a great architectural achievement, and would improve our overall hygiene.
