The energy levels of hydrogen (and other atoms) are quantized, which means that only certain values of energy are allowed.

When changing energy states and emitting photons an individual atom can only emit photons of a certain wavelength, or of a certain energy values, and that value equals the difference in energy when an atom goes from an excited state to a ground state. This means energy levels of an atom are quantized, or in other word the energy levels of an atom are not random.
