Genetically Modified products imply that the ingredient (s) in the product was not natural but derived by bioengineering processes altering its DNA. For example, popcorn may be made from genetically modified corn. Now, GM products are more nutritious and tastier than non-GM products. Moreover, the pesticides used in growing say a GM Crop is less making it environmentally sustainable. Also, there has been a plethora of studies signalling towards no harmful effect or any allergic reaction of these products. Such products being cost-effective and environment friendly, in this day and age have become necessary. But the fears among people such as consuming GM products can lead to organ failure or adverse effect on fertility are still prevalent raising hesitancy in the acceptance of such products. Labelling any product performs an important function of informing the consumer about the ingredients in the product.

The new FDA policy of voluntarily labelling whether the product is a GM one or otherwise in my opinion is not ethical. The reason being a consumer has the full right to make a responsible and informed choice. The FDA should make it mandatory to label the vegetables and fruits in a grocery store that a genetically modified as GM so that the consumer knows what she is buying which is the main motive of labelling. Rather than making it voluntary, it should be mandatory to mention the benefits of GM goods in the products. Raising awareness among the public through GM food fests, the publication of research papers and their availability to the general public, awareness drives and wider publicity of its benefits can make the consumer more aware and informed thereby negating the labelling in the long term. Thus at this development stage, GM products should be compulsorily labelled as such.
