This little sketch about Salvador leaves a great deal unsaid. What questions would you like to ask Sandra Cisneros if you could talk to her?

In a few lines, jot down your feelings about his emotion called envy. Have you seen any of its negative effects? Do you know any people who have no envy whatsoever?

Find three ornate sentences in the story and rewrite each of them using plain, straightforward diction, as if you were modernizing the story for today's readers. Compare your edited versions in class.

What happens to Eckels at the end of Bradbury's story? What is the cause of the final event?

A word map can supply several different kinds of information. It can give the word's etymology, or origin. It can give a definition and a sample sentence, and it can list synonyms (words with similar meanings) and antonyms (words with opposite meanings). With a partner, use a dictionary to make a word map of each word in the Word Bank. (A map of precluded appears below.)

Describe a time when you $\underline{\text{instigated}}$ something.

You might have listed "your cluster diagram (see page ). With a partner or a group, brainstorm all the things that you think make a character in a story seem alive. Try to come up with examples (perhaps from stories in this book) of believable characters and of characters who are not at all convincing. As you brain- storm, you might focus on Mathilde in "The Necklace." Save your notes for possible use in the Writer's Workshop on page 250.

An analogy is a comparison between two pairs of words. The words in each pair have the same relationship to each other-for example: "Toe is to foot as finger is to hand." Copy these analogies on a piece of paper and fill in each blank with a word from the Word Bank.

Amusing is to funny as is to everyday.

Work in groups to create your own collection of tales with unexpected endings. Your Quickwrite notes should give you some ideas. Your tales can be takeoffs of fairy tales, like James Thurber's, or they can be traditional, like the Nigerian tale. Here are some more ideas:

Retell a fairy tale using a modern setting and modern characters. You might update "Cinderella" or "Red Riding Hood" or "Jack and the Beanstalk."

Monitoring Your Comprehension: Using Resources When writers use allusions, they expect readers to understand their references. Usually allusions refer to features of a culture that people share literature, for example, and history. This writer presumes that you know something about the Trojan War and Greek mythology. Probably you have already read some mythology; in this book you'll find stories from the great Greek epic the Odyssey (page 889).

If some of the story's allusions stop you, you can consult three resources in this text:

1. "The Beautiful Helen," on page 305 , which gives a thumbnail sketch of the story behind this story
2. the Meet the Writer on page 311
3. the footnotes Don't get bogged down in identifying allusions. Sometimes you can just guess what a name or event refers to by looking at the context clues.

You've read the title. What do you think this story is about? Jot down your guesses-who is the man called Horse, and what happens to him?

Write a few sentences summing up an folk tale you remember from your childhood(A folk tale is any story passed down by ordinary people through the oral tradition. the story of Cinderella is a popular folk tale. A firy tale is a type of folk tale.)

In the Writer's Workshop, you'll write a short narrative about a conflict. Refer now to the conflicts you listed before you started this collection of stories (see page II), or make a new list of conflicts you might write about. The conflicts can be real or imaginary. (Rainsford's physical struggle with the sea might give you new ideas.) Highlight or circle any conflict you'd like to elaborate on and do a cluster diagram to see if you have enough material for a short narrative. Save your notes.
