Question

Three different organic compounds have the formula C3H8O.\mathrm { C } _ { 3 } \mathrm { H } _ { 8 } \mathrm { O } . Only two of these isomers react with KMnO4\mathrm { KMnO } _ { 4 } (a strong oxidizing agent). Step 1
1 of 2

Out of three different compounds with the formula C3_{3}H8_{8}O two isomers will react with KMnO4_{4}:

-Propanol\textit{Propanol}

when reacting with KMnO4_{4}, one more bond will form between oxygen and first carbon atom that is directly bonded to it and form double bond between them, and discharge hydrogen molecule.

Because of this the product will become an aldehyde "propionaldehyde\textbf{propionaldehyde}".

Next, obtained aldehyde will oxidate to carboxylic acid with oxygen molecule attaching to the hydrogen atom that is directly attached to the first carbon atom.

Hence the obtained product would be "propanoic acid\textbf{propanoic acid}"

-2-propanol\textit{2-propanol}

when reacting with KMnO4_{4}, one more bond will form between oxygen and second carbon atom that is directly bonded to it and form double bond between them.

Because of this reaction the product will become a ketone "2-propanone\textbf{2-propanone}".
