Adaptive immunity is specific immunity. Each time the body encounters a pathogen, the adaptive immunity provides a "custom-made" response that selectively and specifically targets only that pathogen. It "memorizes" the pathogen and the response, so that the next time the body is infected by the same pathogen the body is ready to respond quickly.
