Question
Two pathways, homologous recombination and nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ), can repair double-strand breaks in DNA. If homologous recombination is an errorfree pathway whereas NHEJ is not always error free, why is NHEJ used most of the time in eukaryotes?
Solution
VerifiedStep 1
1 of 2Nonhomologous end joining are used most of the time, especially in higher eukaryotes because the DNA in the cells are in a non-replication state that is either in a resting phase or had stopped completely. In addition, they can function even if there are no sister chromatids or undamaged DNA. Homologous recombination occurs in active dividing cells that require a sister chromatid as template for the repair.
