Two powerful economic forces in Asia are Japan and South Korea. They share certain similarities in the way they do business. International trade is the main focus of both countries. Government involvement in the operation of certain industries is very high, and they face increasing pressure from the United States and other Western nations to open their markets to goods produced by these nations. Japan and South Korea are also active trading partners. They invest in each other’s economy.
However, tensions between the two countries often arise. These are a result of historic confrontations. The effect of these confrontations continues to the present day. Japan annexed Korea in 1910. Trying to increase its influence in the Asian basin, Japan asserted that Korea was a province of Japan historically. To enforce this, efforts were made to eradicate Korean culture and prohibit any use of the language there. Land and businesses were also seized. (In actuality, Japan and China have both struggled for control of Korea throughout history, each claiming it as their province.) After Japan was defeated in World War II, South Korea and North Korea were separated. People in Japan of Korean heritage are not treated as full citizens to this day.
