Voltaire employs different types of humor in Candide. For each basic type listed, find two examples in the selection. humor of language humor of character humor of situation
Solution
VerifiedHumor of language: -The Baroness is described as being three hundred and fifty pounds, and "a person of no small consideration (pg 664)". This is a play on words; not only is she not "small" in terms of her power, but also her physical size.
-The language used in the first paragraph of chapter 2 is so dramatically bleak and sorrowful that it is comical in contrast to Candide's optimistic demeanor.
Humor of character: -Candide, whose name means "innocent", shows endless naive optimism in the face of the many terrible situations he finds himself in. At the beginning of chapter II, he is described as absolutely miserable; he is starving and cold, "half dead with hunger and fatigue." His suffering melts away almost immediately upon meeting the Bulgarian men.
-Pangloss is a very exaggerated caricature of a pretentious know-it-all. He teaches "metaphysio-theologo-cosmolo--nigology", a made-up satirization of the pseudo-science of the day. Pangloss seems very confident in his poorly-thought-out theories.
Humor of situation: -The story's overall theme of misfortune continually coming upon the innocent Candide is a humorous exaggerated series of situations.
-When Candide is running the gauntlet, he is pardoned and his horrible wounds are miraculously healed, only for him to have to go into battle.
