Before the advent of large corporations, American local markets had operated small firms that met the needs of people locally. However, with the appearance of large companies, small businesses ceased to operate. Small businesses could not offer customers low prices because their production costs were high. That is why small business owners could not compete with large business owners. Large companies operated at lower costs. Therefore, the owners of large companies could sell their products at lower prices. Also, large companies used rail transport and shipped their products throughout the country.
