The Khmer Rouge was a communist group that took control of Cambodia in 1975. They were anti-intellectual and anti-modernity and wanted to radically change Cambodian society by making almost everyone work as a simple peasant. To achieve their goals, they brutally destroyed all opposition, killing over 1.5 million people.
