Crystal’s run down the beach shows how our perception can change based on the amount of the information we have about an object or a phenomenon. The closer she got, she could see better and recognize that the object is actually an umbrella. It also illustrates how perception involves a process similar to reasoning. She remembered that there used to be an umbrella under the lifeguard stand and it helped her come to a conclusion about what it is she is seeing. This shows that perception is a process, it takes time and steps, even though it seems automatic to us. Her conclusion about the rope shows that perception is based on perceptual rules which are usually the products of past experiences. Perception happens simultaneously with other actions, in this example, running, so it is a dynamic process.
