People are put in various groups due to their social identities. Namely, people are defined in terms of their race, religion, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc. For every group, there is an opposing group (an outgroup). Moreover, one would describe the groups differently from his / her group others. Also, different groups are often in conflict. So, all those groups (religious, ethnic, racial, etc.) and divisions among humans are created by people. In other words, our social identities are the parts of us defined by the groups that we belong to and that is why the social identity is a socially constructed concept.
