Following the war, the US and the Soviet Union began to oppose one another. It was primarily because of Soviet aggression in Eastern Europe. Contrary to what the United States envisioned for Easter Europe, the Soviet Union continued to invade and spread communism throughout the region. In addition, the Soviet Union began spreading the communist movement in Asian countries, as well as Greece and Turkey. President Truman did not want these countries to succumb to communism. He immediately sought assistance from Congress to aid the countries threatened by the Soviet Union. It became known as the Truman Doctrine.
