The factor that contributed to the victory at Yorktown was the deception of the British to believe that Washington and his French ally Rochambeau planned to attack Manhattan while French troops would set near Yorktown. The French officer Comte de Grasse and his army arrived at the Chesapeake Bay and created a naval blockade of Yorktown. Soon Allied armies marched from New York City to Yorktown and joined De Grasse. They surprised the British and forced them to surrender.
