Seed dormancy is the state wherein the embryo does not germinate unless favorable conditions are met. It is also a state where the tissues are inactive. Since no physiological processes occur during this dormant state, there is no energy expense. Hence, depending on the species, the seeds could stay dormant for years - some even lasting for a century in dormancy.
