Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver tissue. Causes of hepatitis can be divided into infectious and noninfectious. Hepatitis is commonly caused by a viral infection, but it can also be caused by bacterial and parasitic infections. Noninfectious causes of hepatitis are alcohol, drugs, poisons and autoimmune diseases. Based on clinical criteria, hepatitis is divided into acute and chronic. There are 5 main types of hepatitis viruses: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D and hepatitis E. Hepatitis A is the most common cause of acute hepatitis and arises from the ingestion of contaminated water or food. Hepatitis B and C, on the other hand, lead to chronic disease and are one of the most common cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer world-wide.
