We can assume that as the light is traveling through one medium and comes into another with a different density, if it does not enter at the normal angle compared to the medium surface, it will be distorted. Since it has been distorted, its speed will drop by some or rise, depending on the first and the second medium, so we can say that refraction modifies the speed the light as its distorting it. This is given by the refraction index equation:
