Polymerization happens when monomers are repeatedly joined to form a polymer. Alkenes form polymers when the double-bonded carbon from one monomer connects to the double-bonded carbon of another monomer such that the double bond turns into single bonds. An alkene monomer can connect to two other monomers.

Alkenes form polymers because the weak C=C double bond is broken and is replaced by stronger carbon–carbon single bonds in the polymer.
