Mussolini took advantage of economic dysfunction, political turmoil, and rising nationalist sentiment in postwar Italy. During the war, Italy agreed to fight on the side of the Allies on the condition that it would gain some Austro-Hungarian territories; when some of these territories became part of Yugoslavia instead, nationalist feeling were inflamed. In addition, unemployment was high and the government was crippled by infighting. Mussolini’s strongman politics seemed to many to offer an end to the confusion.
