What reaction will take place at the cathode and the anode when each of the following is electrolyzed? molten KF
Solutions
VerifiedWe have molten that is electrolyzed, and we need to write the reactions that are occurring at the cathode and at the anode.
First, let us define some terms:
Galvanic cell is a device in which spontaneous redox reaction occurs, and as a result, electricity is produced.
Electrolytic cell is a device in which electricity is used in order for the redox reaction to occur. Hence, the redox reaction is non-spontaneous.
Oxidation: the loss of electron.
Reduction: the gain of electron.
The anode: the electrode where oxidation occurs.
The cathode: the electrode where reduction occurs.
Remember that
cathode = reduction
anode = oxidation
The most positive potential will be the cathode reaction.
The most negative potential will be the anode reaction.
The reactions are;
Cathode:
Anode:
