Question

What tension in globalization is the cartoonist in source 5 attempting to capture? What kind of change over time has the cartoonist identified?

Solution

Verified

The cartoon in Source 5 reflects a modern, distinctly American (but perhaps not uniquely so) attitude cultivated by the inevitability of free trade and capitalism. While globalization itself was not a new concept, the post-Cold War spread of capitalism, emphasis on free trade, and newly increased international connections (via the growing internet) shifted competition and communication to the global scale in ways never before seen. The bitter attitude depicted in this cartoon also alludes to the increasingly individualistic behavior seen in countries like the US who had unresolved domestic conflicts yet scrambled for rapid economic growth. China and India are highlighted in this statement possibly due to their sheer size (large population = large capacity for growth, massive labor force, and ultimately more competition for the US), with China especially displaying unprecedented economic growth by quadrupling its GDP between 2000-2008. As seen in the two previous questions, free trade and flow of information does not always lead to domestic gains—therefore countries to which labor is outsourced are now seen as our competition rather than struggling developing nations who need our aid. Ironically, those “starving” (ie. the poor and working class) in both the US as well as our “competition” countries arguably make up the most exploited group today.
