Question

What types of motors contain brushes and a commutator? What is the function of these parts?

Solution

Verified

Step 1

1 of 2

DC motors contain brushes\textbf{brushes} and commutators\textbf{commutators}. Brushes (which are mounted on the stator) are used for applying a DC voltage across coiled armature conductors. The connection between brushes (DC voltage) and armature conductor is achieved by the commutator ring.

When the current carrying armature conductor is immersed in a magnetic field, forces appear on a wire and armature conductor start rotating. In order to maintain the rotation, current in the armature conductor has to change it's direction. It can be accomplished by commutator which is discontinuited (there are a small air gaps along commutator). On that way, brushes and commutator act as mechanical switch.
