The first elected political body in the American colonies was the Virginia House of Burgesses. This body was set up almost at the same time as the first settlers landed in North America, in 1619. This was because those settlers brought with them clear ideas about what type of government they wanted to set up in their new lands. What they wanted to do was create a system opposite to the one they ran from in England, which would be more democratic and liberal towards different nationalities and religions, since they used to be persecuted for just that.
